Just a quick message to let you all know that the forum database has hit maximum capacity, and our hosts have sent us an e-mail demanding more money from us.

We have a few short term options - 1) Spend the donation money on hosting 2) Prune the database.

I don't really want to delete any data, and it'll take me a while to write a proper archiving procedure to delete data from the database and write it to HTML files... so option 1 is the way to go for now.

I'm still working on getting our own server - nearly bought one last week, but decided it was a bit too much money to spend per month for the time being.

Anyway, this message is just to let you know that the site may go down for a few days depending on what happens... just a warning, nothing more!

If the site does go down, will you keep us informed?
Maybe posting on http://www.myspace.com/blackpool_bands or something.

Thanks

I was always more up for you spending the coin on the computer side than publicity anyways, so Option 1 say I...let me know (on philreadsbooks@hotmail.com) if now is the optimum time to punt another few quid over to you...

The issue we face here is that hosting will be costing us an additional £16 per month now the database has hit a certain size... then in another 150mb, it'll be an additional £16 etc...

I'm looking in to dedicated servers - which start at £400 a month (for a decent service / security). Big investment for me to make, as the site isn't going to pay for it regardless of donations... but I would be using the server for other things too anyway.

I'm still considering it... it's a lot of money to spend, but it's by far the best way to go.

It's been confirmed. You're fucking loopy!

Are you thinking of running eBay from it or summat?!

Yeah, a load of people have said that. I managed to get them down to £310 a month + VAT, but for a dedicated server, you pay for the server, the dedicated line, the firewall and the backup. A proper managed solution... you can get cheaper dedicated servers, but they don't come with any of the above - £50 a month for shared bandwidth, no firewall and no backup. If you want any of those, they sting you like fuck...

With shared hosting, you're limited as to what you can do (I can't even get animated gifs uploaded via ASP on this solution), though I'm going to be changing to C#, which will give me a lot more options.

And ebay costs tens of thousands a month to run, not a few hundred...
